Privacy Concerns in the Library

Some Thoughts on Technology and Privacy | TechEssence.Info

Jenn Riley wrote this post on the relationship of technology and privacy last week over at the TechEssence.Info blog (have I mentioned how much I enjoy this site???). Privacy issues are a huge concern for libraries – even more so since many people today are willing to sacrifice privacy for convenience. This often means that we have more data on our computers and our systems than we want. At the library where I work, we use Deep Freeze to (hopefully) wipe out search histories, etc. when a computer is rebooted. We take active steps to insure that we do not gather personal information. Despite this, we do not have clearly written policies about privacy – about what types of data we have – about what we do with it. I need to work on this.
