The Nightmare of Daylight Savings Time

Right about now, I’m hating daylight savings time. I’m up to ears in software patches, notifying people that their appointments in Outlook might be off and all sorts of others things that are off just because of the change to the start of daylight savings time. The three week time period starting on March 12th promises to be quite fun. I’m really thinking that I ought to take at least that first week off!!!!

This is one of the really irritating and thankless IT tasks – that always seem to creep up. Nobody really understands how much time they take up. Nothing else can get done until they are completed. If we are lucky, nobody really notices anything at all.

What has been patched? What hasn’t been patched? Who knows? Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. Let the fun begin!

I wonder if glibc-2.5 covered me on the new DST…

  2. Aaargh and Aaaaargh!! In December, Western Australia started daylight savings for the first time in 30 years. Really not a huge problem EXCEPT..there is no patch for Windows Mobile on my PDA to accomodate this. My husband and I sync our PDAs to Outlook on the PC and consequently all our appoointments on the PDA are an hour out….oh, except for the ones we write into the PDA while out an about. But then they appear wrong when we re-sync back to Outlook. So we’ve just given up writing appointments into the PDA, and now bring a little slip of paper home to enter onto the PC’s calendar. Aaaargh!.

Hope your experience is better 🙂

Kathryn, thanks for the information. Our IT department is mostly concerned about PDAs and the like. I agree with your sentiments about DST not being a huge problem – it is more of an annoyance that seems to be growing in complexity. We change our clocks on March 11th, so next week promises to be fun!!!
