I Am Drowning In A Sea of Metadata

I am working almost exclusively on my digital library project which is due on Monday, July 30th (for ILS 655-Digital Libraries). Currently, I am adding metadata to all of my resources, making sure my metadata is consistent, and going back and forth and back and forth fixing things. While I am enjoying the project overall, I am not having much fun with this metadata stuff. Well, actually that isn’t accurate. I am quite keen on coming up the overall metadata scheme – categorizing and classifying my resources. However, the brute force need to put metadata page on every page is testing my patience. I wouldn’t want to do this for a living.

I believe wholeheartedly in the importance of good metadata. However, I’m sure it will be a long time before I go near it again. Metadata on web resources – you are not my friend!

Hi Linda, sorry to take so long to respond. I wanted to get the class over with – to get some perspective on things. All in all, I loved the Digital Libraries class. It was a great deal of work – especially since creating a digital library is extremely time consuming. However, it was quite fulfilling to actually be able to build one. As for advice, I would try and talk to some students who have taken it at your school. If you will be building a DL, you may want to do some prep work on website creation. I know that some students in my class were learning how to build websites while trying to build their libraries – and that this added some serious stress. I would also read up on metadata. This was one of the most difficult and time consuming parts of my project. Good metadata is essential for findability.

Best of luck! I think learning about digital libraries is an invaluable piece of the MLS.
